Teen Counseling Cumming, GA
Adolescents are developmentally physically, mentally, and emotionally unique in comparison to children and adults. Typically, they need different techniques—play therapy does not meet their developmental needs, nor does psychotherapy (i.e., talk therapy) alone. Often, counselors engage in activity therapy with adolescents.
Activity therapy varies in many ways from one counselor to the next as well as from one adolescent to the next. Activity therapy may include various forms of self-expression physically, artistically, musically, etc. The methods used are chosen based on the adolescent’s strengths, struggles, interests, and mood.
Some activities may feel very comfortable for your adolescent while others will push him or her to their emotional edge. This is done in a safe way with time and space to process and grow from their experiences. As always, your adolescent is invited to participate in various activities and has the ability to stop the activity at any point. Their emotional safety during our teenage counseling services is of utmost importance.
Helping Teenagers Grow
Dr. Jimenez and her team have more than 10 years of experience in counseling teenagers with various mental health issues, from various backgrounds, and at various stages of wellness. One common issue that adolescents face are having difficulty with transitions like those caused by COVID, changing schools, moving, or changes in family life such as new marriages, divorces, or new siblings. Another issue that adolescents struggle with is anxiety. Anxiety can be crippling for anyone and especially for adolescents. Teenagers often feel they are trapped in the transition between becoming an adult with more control and being a child with little-to-no control. Anxiety can come in the form of stomach aches, headaches, irritability, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, changes in eating habits, difficulty concentrating, or even in other ways. Depression can have similar symptoms, but it comes across differently. For example, while someone struggling with anxiety may have more difficulty falling asleep, persons with depression may struggle more to stay asleep.
If left untreated in adolescents with unhealthy or low levels of coping skills, some mental health issues or struggles may take a dangerous turn. For example, self-harm is a fear of many parents. Self-harm is also something that is treatable through therapy. Suicidal or homicidal thoughts may run through your teen’s mind. It is vital to get them help as soon as possible. Teens may also engage in risky behaviors such as sex and drugs. Help is just a phone call away.
