Meet Dr. Kyrstin

Dr. Kyrstin Lokkesmoe was born in Tulsa, OK and raised in Columbus, GA.  Dr. Kyrstin comes from a military family of 8 (6 kids!).  She graduated from a High Achievers Program in high school and went on to get her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Berry College in Mount Berry, GA—northwest of Atlanta.  During that time, she dedicated her time to working in a psychiatric hospital and a shelter for women survivors of domestic violence.  She also participated in a study abroad opportunity she created and went to Peru for a summer.  There, she volunteered in an orphanage and hospital for children with disabilities while she dedicated herself to learning the culture and the Spanish language.

She then worked in an urgent care center doing triages and worked her way up to being the personnel manager.  She had a hunger to work even more closely with people and decided to pursue her degree Rehabilitation Counseling at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA.  Dr. Kyrstin began her internship full time at a community agency and began to specialize in bilingual counseling, crisis, trauma, and working with children, adolescents, and family counseling.  Dr. Kyrstin continued her education by earning her Education Specialist degree in Professional Counseling after being hired by the agency where she completed her internship.  Deciding she wanted to help even more and reach more people, Dr. Kyrstin went on to complete her doctorate in Counseling at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

When not working, Dr. Kyrstin loves to spend time with her family and likes to be active outdoors.  Dr. Kyrstin rowed in college on the crew team and loves to kayak, swim, and play in the water.  Dr. Kyrstin loves to get out on bike rides, jogs (to call it running would be a stretch!), walks around the neighborhood, and hikes.

Experienced with all Ages

Children and adolescents have always held a special place in Dr. Kyrstin’s heart.  Because she comes from such a big family (6 kids), she is well-versed in childcare and helped with her 3 younger siblings for as long as she can remember.  Working and playing with children is one of Dr. Kyrstin’s natural talents because she is able to be warm, silly, kind, and firm all when necessary.  Freedom within the limits of safety is her goal for all children and adolescents with whom she works.

Dr. Kyrstin has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and families in every step of her professional career.  When she was a teenager herself, Dr. Kyrstin was babysitting and refereeing soccer and was a favorite among children.  Dr. Kyrstin believes in sharing her gifts and talents.  She loves to give families a clear picture or snapshot of what is going on with their child so that the family, especially the parents, have some clarity of what is RIGHT with their child (the strengths of their child) as well as areas for growth AND what they can do to help their precious child.

There is no greater honor than to be trusted to help set a people up for success in reaching their goals.
